Optimize Electrolytic Capacitor Selection in Intermittent Applications

Many applications only call for maximum ripple current on an intermittent basis — for example, a power steering unit where maximum current only occurs when turning the steering wheel. This allows optimization of the electrolytic capacitor selection. Otherwise, selecting the capacitor to meet the continuous peak current requirement adds unnecessary costs. This article tells how. Read the article as it appeared in Power Electronics Technology magazine, February 2003.

High Voltage Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors:
Where is the Limit?

A paper originally presented at PCIM in the USA on 11 September 2001. When specifying large-can electrolytic capacitors it is often difficult to account properly for the transient and surge performance. Thus design engineers sometimes choose a capacitor with a higher than necessary safety margin. As these capacitors are one of the higher-priced items in a power electronics circuit, over- specifying can be costly. With proper understanding of transient and surge performance one can reduce the component cost without sacrificing reliability.
