Timing capacitors in SMPS - Using Film Capacitors By Andy Bellavia Designers of switched mode power supplies often use an NPO ceramic capacitor to set the power supply switching frequency. However Evox capacitor series PFR5 can provide a lower cost alternative. PFR5 is constructed of polypropylene film and metal foil in a winding especially designed for stability. The curve of capacitance vs. temperature is negative and varies by less that 1% over a typical SMPS operating temperature range. The available capacitance range is 100pF to 0.022µF with a rated voltage of 63VDC. Voltages up to 1000VDC are available. Complete specifications may be obtained directly from the Evox Rifa Web site.
